‘‘In art, you can value a lemon and a pair of dirty shoes equally. In everyday life, we might instinctively value one over the other.’’

YiChun Huang

YiChun Huang

From a period of inner turmoil to a deeper sense of presence, Yichun reflects on how art and her relationship with animals have shaped the way she understands herself and the world around her.

Through her exploration of philosophy, psychology and astrology, Yichun became increasingly interested in what it means to be fully present. This way of thinking has become central to her work - living in the present. During the creative process, Yichun see things in terms of energy rather than simply physical form.

Yichun adopted two cats when she was young. Through living with them, she came to understand animals as more than companions. They are family - with their own space, personality and way of being. For Yichun, art offers a way to encounter the world without prejudice.

Perhaps living alongside animals asks us to do something similar - to observe, to share space, and to understand without always needing words
